Africa, during the age of global colonialism: Four trading companies attract the attention of European investors with promises of wealth and riches. By investing plantation goods like coffee, bananas and cotton, players acquire shares of trading companies based in Mombasa, Cairo, Saint-Louis and Cape Town. However, the value of a company is only as good as its sphere of influence, so helping it to expand into new territories is vital if players want their investments to pay off. At the end of the game, all company shares are cashed out and whoever earned the most money wins.

Mombasa features a unique, rotating-display hand-mechanism that drives game play. Each round players choose three action cards from their hand, then reveal them simultaneously and carry out the actions. These cards are then placed in a discard pile, and the previously played cards recovered for the subsequent round. Will you collect diamonds or opt for clever bookkeeping? Will you play aggressively by expanding companies and pushing back others, or will you sit on the fence and jump in at an opportune moment? Perhaps a little of everything!

Each company has a double-sided investment strip, so companies will vary from game to game based on which sides of the strips are revealed.
